"I've met way too many people that think cabinet building and basic woodworking skills are beyond their ability to learn. They're not and I'll prove it."
-John Gerard, Creater of Cabinets from Scratch
In the first group of lessons, I'll show you what tools you absolutely need, which ones are optional and which ones are just nice to have. We'll discuss each major tool in detail, so you have a deep understanding of how you'll use each one during a cabinet build and so you know which tools to buy or borrow for your shop.
In the second group of lessons, I'll teach you the basics of cabinet construction. We'll cover the most common cabinet "looks" and explore the most popular techniques for assembling and joining cabinet boxes, drawers and doors so you can figure out which approaches most fit you, your skills and your available tools.
In the third lesson group, I'll show you how to dimension a cabinet from scratch and we'll use free software to help with the planning and dimensioning. I'll also show you how to visually deconstruct any cabinet you see on Pinterest or in a kitchen, home or bath magazine so you’ll be prepared to build any cabinet you want.
Next, we'll move into building our first set of cabinets. We'll take our dimensions, pick out our material and get started cutting and joining our lumber. We’ll build a basic, white, painted shaker style cabinet that will rival any cabinet you’d get at that Swedish furniture store. You’ll see how to build everything including simple doors with hidden hinges and drawers so you can see how to build a cabinet from an idea on paper to a physical finished project.
With our first set of cabinets completed, we can then up our game and build a more challenging set of cherry wood cabinets. In this section you can expect a true custom cabinet building experience. We’ll use decorative hinges and I’ll show you what mistakes to avoid when attempting to use stain on certain woods.
Lastly, we’ll end with the finishing process and our bonus lessons. I’ll show you the exact finishing products I use so you can get a store-bought look or opt for a more homemade appearance. You’ll see how to install your finished cabinets and I’ll also add videos to address any questions subscribers need help with.
